Phenol is both a manufactured chemical and a natural substance. When pure it is a colourless to white solid; the commercial product is a liquid. It is mainly used in the production of phenolic resins and in the production of nylon and other synthetic fibres. It is also used in slimicides, as a disinfectant and antiseptic, and in medical preparations such as mouthwashes and throat lozenges.
