Monomers are small molecules that form large chains through polymerization. They are the building blocks of countless materials, from plastics to coatings, adhesives to fibres.
Key monomers
Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is widely used in acrylic resins and sheets; styrene monomer in polystyrene, ABS and SAN resins; and vinyl acetate monomer in adhesives and paint emulsions. 2-Ethylhexyl acrylate is used as a copolymer in emulsion paints.
