Formic acid (methanoic acid), popularly known as ant acid, is the simplest single-carbon carboxylic acid. It has both aldehyde and carboxylic acid properties, is about ten times stronger than acetic acid and readily forms esters with alcohols. In industry it is used as a preservative and antibacterial in livestock feed, to extend the shelf life of some foods, in leather tanning, in textile finishing and as a coagulant in rubber production. It is also used in beekeeping, in limescale-removing cleaning agents and as a hydrogen source in fuel cells.

It is also used in electroplating, papermaking, metal acid cleaning and cosmetics.

Hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) is an odourless organic phosphonate. It is a good sequestrant and is highly effective against calcium, iron, copper and zinc ions. It performs well in water treatment plants, maintains its stability in the presence of chlorine and can dissolve oxidation on metal surfaces. It is a good scale and corrosion inhibitor with good stability at high pH values. It is used in water cooling and treatment systems, swimming-pool detergents, metal surface treatments and the textile sector.

It serves as a stabilizer in textiles, a solvent and wetting agent in food, a preservative in the pharmaceutical and health sector, in creams and sun lotions, and as a de-icer in vehicle brake systems and on aircraft runways.
