1,4-Butanediol (BDO) is colourless and odourless. It is fully soluble in water and other organics. It is also widely used as a chemical bond for urethane thermoplastics, plasticizing polyester, paints and coatings, thermal solvents (copolyester) and solvent-based adhesives.

It serves as a stabilizer in textiles, a solvent and wetting agent in food, a preservative in the pharmaceutical and health sector, in creams and sun lotions, and as a de-icer in vehicle brake systems and on aircraft runways.

Phenol is both a manufactured chemical and a natural substance. When pure it is a colourless to white solid; the commercial product is a liquid.
